Inlet Air Temperatures are a major area of concern for any turbocharged car. With many modified 996 TTs producing greater than factory horsepower figures, the limits of the stock intercooling system have been far exceeded. Capable of handling well over 700hp, AWE 996TT Intercoolers are the best solution for owners looking to upgrade their factory system with a properly engineered solution. AWE designed a cast end tank utilizing CAD and CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) software to ensure proper flow distribution through the end tanks and intercooler. Since an OEM option was not available, and our power goals were well north of 700hp, we undertook the task to construct a completely new intercooler system. Once the end tanks were designed, then cast, they were then machined on our CNC mill, welded to specially designed cores, power tested, and refined on our AWD dyno. And in 2012, AWE introduced carbon fiber shrouds to the mix, producing a lighter, and more aesthetically appealing kit as well. The bulk of the AWE side mount intercooler testing was conducted on S4s with the previously available AWE RSK04 kit installed. This is important to consider, given that as boost rises, so will boost drop due to core restriction. Thus, an intercooler can perform well at relatively low boost levels but can begin to perform worse than stock if the boost drop is high enough to negate any gains seen from temperature drops. Not only did AWE want the Audi 2.7T Performance Intercooler Kit to be clearly superior to the RS4 unit performance, but AWE also ensured that it would require very little modification to the US spec Audi 2.7T models during fitment. The RS4 intercooler units are made to fit the Europe only RS4 and mating them to a US spec 2.7T model requires significant cutting of both the intercoolers and the vehicle itself. The AWE design can be fitted in less than half the time of the typical RS4 kit. This means paying less for labor charges. Since RS4 units were never intended to be used on the US S4 chassis, extensive modifying or tweaking of the areas around the intercoolers is needed to force fitment. The AWE Audi 2.7T Performance Intercooler Kit was designed and built to fit the US S4 chassis, resulting in a much better, cleaner fit with very little modification required. The AWE ColdFront™ Intercooler Kit leverages generations of Porsche engineering, dating back to the 996. Cast end tanks designed in-house, specially designed cores, power testing, dyno-fueled refinement, and more. Compared to the 991’s stock intercoolers, the AWE ColdFront™ Intercooler Kit's cores are 17% larger (523 cubic inches vs 448 cubic inches). In contrast to the stock cores, the AWE ColdFront™ Intercoolers are a high-flow bar and plate style and are built to our charge row and fin count specifications. These specifications result in 20% reduced air temperatures and 50% improved pressure resistance through the cores. These lowered air temperatures and freer flow allowed the AWE Porsche 991 Turbo S to achieve dyno-verified max gains of 26 HP and 21 lb-ft of torque at the crank when used with the AWE 991 Turbo Performance Exhaust and S-FLO Carbon Intake, and performance software, translating to almost a full second reduction in 60-130 mph acceleration times. AWE designed the biggest cores the 991 TT rear fenders could fit, and as a result of the size difference, the OEM ducts couldn’t be utilized. To feed fresh, cooler air to the intercooler cores, proper flowing ducts are mandatory. The result: straightforward and bolt-in carbon fiber, seamlessly mating to the AWE ColdFront™ Intercoolers. No trimming or cutting necessary -- the AWE Fitment Guarantee remains intact. During development of AWE high horsepower turbos kits for the 997TT, AWE experienced excessively high intake air temperatures. Upon close examination of the stock intercoolers, AWE found they matched the same specs as the 996TT X50/GT2 design, which is suitable to 600hp, but not much beyond that. Since an OEM option was not available, and AWE power goals were well north of 700hp, AWE undertook the task to construct a completely new intercooler system. Compared to stock, AWE cores are 37% larger (422 cubic inches vs 308 cubic inches). In contrast to the stock cores, AWE are a high flow bar and plate style and are built to our charge row and fin count specs. These specifications resulted in improved intake temperatures by a massive 55F and improved drop pressure resistance through the core by 1 psi. Considering that extremely little trimming is involved to fit such effective units to the car, this is a huge engineering feat. In addition to the superior core and end tank design, the AWE kit also features 6-ply silicone hoses with gentle curves to prevent bursting under pressure.
